One platform. From the first meeting to the first loan.
Community finance, on the record.
Savings groups already run their own banks. Chomoka digitises what they do, turns it into a financial record institutions can trust, and connects that record to credit and formal financial services — on one integrated platform.

Millions save together. Too many still manage money on paper.
Communities already have financial systems that work. They save together. They lend to one another. They cover school fees, stock, medicine, funerals, emergencies. What they don't have is a record that survives a lost notebook, a disputed balance, or a treasurer who moves away.
Chomoka doesn't replace the system communities trust. It makes it durable.
Without a record, a group that has repaid faithfully for eight years is still a stranger to every lender.
How it works
From the first contribution to the next opportunity.
-
01
Digitise the meeting
Guided meetings on one shared Android phone. Contributions, loans, repayments, fines, social fund and share-out, calculated to the group's own rules. Works with no connectivity; syncs when it finds some. SMS receipts so every member can verify what was recorded.
-
02
Build the data trail
Every meeting adds to a verifiable history — per member and per group. Attendance, savings consistency, borrowing behaviour, repayment performance. Auditable, timestamped, and impossible to revise with a pen.
-
03
Turn history into credit
That history becomes creditworthiness. Group and member loan products, credit scoring, disbursement schedules and repayment tracking — plus loans that meet groups where they are: device loans that finance the phone itself, airtime loans, and input credit.
-
04
Connect to formal finance
Banks, SACCOs, MFIs and impact lenders underwrite against real data instead of guesswork. Disbursement and repayment run over mobile money and bank rails. The marketplace connects members to inputs, insurance and services.

Same data. Different vantage point. Nobody re-keys anything.

In their words
“Everything is recorded on the phone and you can't change it with a pen. This gives us confidence that our records do not change between meetings.”
“Before Chomoka, loan recordkeeping could take more than two hours. Now we can finish everything in half an hour.”
“One of the many benefits is the summary that is sent to us by SMS. This helps us to be confident in the records as they are entered.”

Origins
Built on what savings groups actually do.
Chomoka's design began with human-centred research alongside savings group members in Tanzania in 2017, in partnership with CARE International — whose savings group programming has reached 7.6 million members across 51 countries. That fieldwork shaped everything since: one shared phone, offline first, calculations configured to the group's own rules.
Chomoka has since been acquired by Ensibuuko, which is taking it far beyond where it started — from a savings group recordkeeping tool to the credit and financial infrastructure behind community finance across Africa.

Technology for impact shouldn't start with a licence fee.
Codezero is the open-source edition of Chomoka, for organisations building financial inclusion infrastructure in the public interest.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Where can we get the app?
Chomoka is available on Google Play. Organisations running savings group programmes should contact us so groups are set up with the right configuration and trainer support.
What phone does a group need?
A basic Android smartphone. One phone is shared by the group and typically stored in the group lockbox between meetings.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. Chomoka is built to run a full meeting offline. An SMS or data connection is used to back up records and send member receipts when one is available.
Does Chomoka support mobile money?
Yes, for the group's digital wallet — groups can receive and move money over mobile money and bank rails. Individual member savings contributions are recorded in the group ledger.
What does it cost?
Groups pay a small fee to a local trainer who supports them to digitise. Organisations supporting savings groups should contact us to discuss programme deployment.
What happens if the phone is lost?
Records are backed up, so a replacement phone can be restored without losing the group history.
How is our data protected?
Data is handled in line with each country's data protection law, with encrypted communication to the server and cloud backups.
Which kinds of groups can use it?
Chomoka is designed for the Village Savings and Loan methodology, and is configurable for similar group structures.
